There are a handful of locations across the Central Highlands that offer climbing routes. The majority of rock formations in the region originated in the Devonian period around 400 million years ago and take form as granite outcrops. Situated on the Western rim of the Cerberean Caldera, Cathedral Ranges is a favourite destination that has a number of different cliffs and spectacular tilted sandstone rock formations. The 25km wide Caldera was created after a cataclysmic volcanic eruption some 373 million years ago that played a major role in shaping the landscape of the Central Highlands we see today.
